Spa Pima, the student-run day spa at Pima Medical Institute, 957 S. Dobson Road in Mesa has expanded its amenities and hours. The resort-style, state-of-the-art facility offers: Swedish Massage; Aromatherapy Massage; Chair Massage; Reflexology; Spa Stone; Moor Mud Cocoon; Herbal Wrap; Ultimate Foot Soak and Paraffin Wax.
The facility?s plush features include: nine private rooms; ceramic tile flooring and counter tops; adjustable, subdued lighting; relaxing music; elegant and comfortable, resort-style furnishings; a leather recliner for reflexology; a back bar where students mix herbs, aromatherapy and other massage products; and two large restrooms with upgraded fixtures and accessories.
In addition to performing massage and spa therapies, the students operate the clinic and learn all aspects of the day spa industry including how to manage a clinic or spa from the front office, ordering supplies, as well as retail product sales. Even taking inventory is multi-focused. Students are responsible for laundering their own towels, but order sheets from an outside vendor so they will learn how to manage inside and outside inventory.
?We worked with the Arizona Spa Director?s Association to find out what skills they were looking for in employees, as well as what features should be offered in a day spa so we could offer our students a realistic working environment,? said Christopher Luebke, campus director for the Mesa career college. ?We believe we?ve created a win/win operation at Spa Pima because we provide our students with terrific, hands-on training, and the public can enjoy a first-rate spa experience and massage at only a fraction of the cost?.
Classes for the Massage Therapy program run every six weeks. The 720-hour curriculum is completed in 36 weeks for students taking day classes and 41 weeks for those enrolled in the evening program.
PMI is one of the premier medical career colleges in the western United States. The privately owned, accredited school provides students with a well-rounded education embracing theoretical classroom studies, as well as on-site training in allied health facilities within the community. This gives the student the opportunity to learn while working in a real-world environment.
PMI has been serving students since 1972, with campuses in: Albuquerque, New Mexico; Mesa and Tucson, AZ; Denver and Colorado Springs, CO; Seattle and Renton, WA; Las Vegas, NV and Chula Vista, CA. Additional information is available at http://www.pmi.edu or by calling 1-888-442-5998.

Reflexology massage therapy – originally referred to as “zone” therapy – is administered directly to your hands and feet, but the healing and relaxation it provides benefits your entire body. By sending direct signals to the brain, reflexology massage therapy provides a balance to your nervous system. And the stretching and rotating performed on the various areas of the hands and feet during reflexology massage therapy, the healing process is targeted precisely where your body needs it. Endorphins – known to provide proper balance to the body – are released during reflexology massage therapy, but only when administered by a trained set of hands.
The theory behind the reflexology revolution is that there are reflex points located on different regions of the feet and hands that have a direct link to glands, organs and other body parts. A brief summary:
*Our bodies are divided into a total of ten zones – five on each side of our body.
*Each part of the body – including organs – is linked to specific parts of our hands and feet.
*Abnormalities in our body can be diagnosed through reflexology massage therapy when administered by a trained expert.
*Reflexology massage therapy stimulates the flow of nutrients, nerve impulses and blood to various zones of the body to provide relief.
Reflexology has been gaining in popularity over the past number of years due to its relaxing tendencies and the absence of pain during the procedure. (If you do experience pain during a reflexology massage, be sure to tell your therapist immediately, as this is not considered to be normal.) A recent study concluded that one-third of cancer patients report using reflexology to complement their treatment. (It should be noted however, that in most cases, reflexology should be used as a complementary treatment and is not meant to replace other medical treatments.) Reflexology massage is frequently used for post-operative or palliative care as well.
What medical conditions can be relieved through reflexology massage therapy? Some are listed below.
*Stress-related symptoms
*Headaches resulting from too much tension
*Various stages of arthritis
*Injuries resulting from participation in sports
*Hormone level imbalance
*Digestive system problems such as constipation
*Poor sleep habits
*Neck and back pain
*Menstrual symptoms such as PMS
So what can you expect when getting a reflexology massage? A treatment is typically 45 to 60 minutes long and commences with you and your therapist discussing your overall health. When the therapist has a good understanding of your current situation and goals for improvement, you will begin the reflexology massage session by removing your socks and shoes and taking your place in a reclining chair or massage table.
By stimulating different areas of your feet and hands, the therapist can identify and address any areas of stress or tension. Once he has isolated these areas, he can begin the reflexology massage therapy by using the proper amount of pressure in just the right spots. (The use of lotion or oil is optional.)
How will you feel after a reflexology massage treatment? Most people claim to feel relaxed and calm throughout their entire body… some even say they feel sleepy. So although reflexology massage is performed on your feet and hands, your entire body benefits from it.

In talking about using the ball I will refer to gravity. When the cervix and baby are being pulled by gravity, this is gravity plus, when the torso is parallel to the floor or bed this is gravity neutral. There is also a position called breaking position when you are on your knees and your head is lower propped up by two fists stacked on top of each other, this is gravity negative and is used to break from pushing before you get to 10 cms. How do you use the ball in labor? If you are sitting on the ball it is important that your legs are open wide and your feet are on the outside edge of the ball(the same width as if you were sitting backwards on a chair or backwards on the toilet). This helps keep your pelvic outlet wide. Because you are sitting on the ball the inside of your pelvis can relax because it is not working to hold you up like when you stand. You can make hip circles as we already talked about. You can also do pelvic tilts and release (this moves the babys head between pubic bone and tailbone) and can help the baby wiggle down onto the cervix. Tipping the hips side to side shifts weight on the sit bones and this helps the baby wiggle down if they seem to be stuck on one side of the pelvis or other. I have had many students say they spend the last two weeks before their due date and lots of time in labor just moving their pelvis around until they feel what feels like the whole of the babys top of the head on the cervix. You can bring the ball about a foot out …
